This unit is based on the Year 2 Australian Curriculum HASS Inquiry Skills, Knowledge and Understandings. Students explore people and places of historical interest. They pose inquiry questions that encourage deeper investigation, as well as create an information report and a digital presentation. Students design a brochure for a historical tour, encompassing the skills and knowledge learnt in this unit. They communicate their ideas through the presentation of their research, provide feedback to their peers and self-reflect on their achievement.
Pose questions about past and present objects, people, places and events
Collect data and information from observations and identify information and data from sources provided
Sort and record information and data, including location, in tables and on plans and labelled maps
Sequence familiar objects and events
Compare objects from the past with those from the present and consider how places have changed over time
Interpret data and information displayed in pictures and texts and on maps
Draw simple conclusions based on discussions, observations and information displayed in pictures and texts and on maps
Present narratives, information and findings in oral, graphic and written forms using simple terms to denote the passing of time and to describe direction and location
The history of a significant person, building, site and/or part of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past
The importance today of a historical site of cultural or spiritual significance in the local area, and why it should be preserved
Demonstrates skills of historical inquiry and communication
Communicates geographical information and uses geographical tools for inquiry
Identifies and describes significant people, events, places and sites in the local community over time
Collect and record relevant geographical data and information from the field and secondary sources, using ethical protocols
Represent data and the location of places and their features by constructing tables, plans and labelled maps
Collect and record geographical data and information from the field and other sources
Interpret data and information to draw conclusions and describe the direction and location of places, using terms such as north, south, opposite, near, far
Identify the content features of primary sources when describing the significance of people, places or events
The history of a significant person, building, site or part of the natural environment in the local community and what it reveals about the past

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the unit and will understand what is meant by historical interest.
Lesson 2
Local Research
In this lesson, students will conduct their own research to find local people and places of historical interest.
Lesson 3
Map It Out!
In this lesson, students will create a class map of historical places and people based on their research that they conducted in the previous lesson.
Lesson 4
Inquiry Questioning - Person
In this lesson, students will learn how to pose an inquiry question to a local person of historical interest.
Lesson 5
Researching - Person
Students will conduct research on their historical person of interest and answer their inquiry questions.
Lesson 6
The Information Report - Person
In this lesson, students will complete an information report about their person of interest.
Lesson 7
Questioning, Investigating and Digital Presentation- Place
In this lesson, students will select a local historical place of interest.
Lesson 8
Local Walk
In this lesson, students will go for a walk around their local community to find a place of historical interest.
Lesson 9
Historical Tour
