Decode and Colour

The ‘Decode and Colour’ worksheet will encourage your students to use all of their decoding skills as they read short, simple, decodable passages. Students will read the passage before highlighting the key words shown in the pictures. This worksheet is part of our larger ‘Decoding Detectives’ unit.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to use vowel sounds, consonant blends and digraphs when writing and reading one- and two-syllable words.
  • We are learning to read decodable and authentic texts fluently using phonic knowledge and to monitor meaning using context and grammar.
  • We are learning to understand that a letter can represent more than one sound, e.g. cat, swan, ball, fast etc. and that a syllable must contain a vowel sound.
  • We are learning to read decodable and predictable texts fluently and use strategies to make meaning.
  • We are learning to use vowel sounds, consonant digraphs and blends when writing and reading single syllable words.

Curriculum alignment

Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Differentiation

Modifications

Some students may still be working on decodable sentences rather than passages.
