Roll and Share Recounts

This is a fun game to use when introducing recount writing following a weekend, holiday, important event or a language experience. It will help get ideas flowing for writing as it encourages students to verbally express their ideas while discussing the 5 W’s used in a recount.

Print off multiple copies for pairs or small groups to use as a speaking and listening task to generate ideas prior to planning a recount.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to edit texts for meaning, spelling, capital letters and full stops, for ourselves and others.
  • We are learning to construct texts using software including word processing programs, e.g. MS Word.
  • We are learning to create short imaginative, informative and persuasive texts to explore, record and report ideas using familiar words and beginning writing knowledge.
  • We are learning to create and edit short written texts to record and report ideas and events using capital letters, punctuation and correct spelling of CVC words.
  • We are learning to recognise that texts have different features and purposes, e.g. recount, narrate, express opinion, inform, report and explain.
  • We are learning to identify that texts serve different purposes and that this affects how they are organised.
