English Unit: Recount Writing

This unit is a terrific way to introduce the structure of recount writing to your students.
Students will learn about including the 5W’s in their writing, as well as structuring the sequence of their writing. There are a variety of games and templates to assist students with verbalising and structuring their own recounts based on their own experiences. They are also ideal to use alongside language experiences planned by the teacher.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise that texts have different features and purposes, e.g. recount, narrate, express opinion, inform, report and explain.
  • We are learning to identify that texts serve different purposes and that this affects how they are organised.
  • We are learning to create, re-read and edit short written and multimodal texts to report on a topic, express an opinion or recount an event using capital letters, punctuation and correct spelling.
  • We are learning to create texts for a purpose that show our understanding of the connection between writing, speech and images.
