English Unit: Strategic Spelling
This comprehensive and detailed unit plan is designed to support students to learn spelling strategies associated with root words and affixes. The unit contains a presentation that walks students through the strategies, a student reference card, accompanying worksheets and games. At the completion of the unit, there is an assessment for teachers to utilise to assess student learning.
Learning goals
- We are learning to use known words, base words, prefixes and suffixes, word origins, letter patterns and spelling generalisations to spell new words.
- We are learning to use less common plurals, e.g. cactus/cacti, louse/lice, and understand how a suffix changes the meaning or grammatical form of a word, e.g. ‘tion’ can change verbs into nouns, protect – protection.
