This short unit is based on the Year 5 Australian National Curriculum for science. It is designed to build on students' prior knowledge of the geology to understand how the Earth’s surface changes over time, both slowly or quickly through weathering and erosions, and how we influence those changes.
Students get hands-on experience of how natural forces shape the landscape with a series of exciting in-class activities
Each of the lessons has an accompanying worksheet for students to complete and a final quiz which can be used as a summative assessment task.

Overview

The key concepts in this unit include:
 

  • The surface of the Earth is constantly changing.
  • These changes can occur over millennia through weathering and erosion, or overnight through natural disasters.
  • Natural disasters have an unparalleled force to change the Earth, and impact the people on it.
  • We are also responsible for changes to the Earth’s surface, sometimes intentionally, sometimes as an intended consequence.
  • We need to become more aware of the impact we are having on erosion and surface change.

  • We are learning to describe how weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition cause slow or rapid changes to the Earth’s surface.
