This unit is based on the Year 3 Australian Curriculum HASS Inquiry Skills, Knowledge and Understandings for History. Students will identify the significance of events, symbols and emblems to Australia’s identity and diversity. They will examine how events such as Australia Day, Anzac Day and NAIDOC Week are celebrated, commemorated or recognised in Australia.

Celebrations and commemorations in places around the world (for example, Chinese New Year in countries of the Asia region, Bastille Day in France, Independence Day in the USA), including those that are observed in Australia (for example, Christmas Day, Diwali, Easter, Hanukkah, the Moon Festival and Ramadan)

Significant Events
To understand a significant event and identify the important celebrations and commemorations we recognise annually in Australia.
Lesson 2
Symbols and Emblems
We will explore the important symbols and emblems that have come to represent our country.
Lesson 3
Point of View
We will explore the origins of Australia Day to understand that people hold different points of view about when and how this day should be celebrated or commemorated.
Lesson 4
Celebrations
We will understand the importance of celebrations to different groups in Australia and summarise the similarities and differences between them.
Lesson 5
Anzac Day
We will explore the origins of Anzac Day to understand how and why it is commemorated and the symbols that have come to represent it.
Lesson 6
NAIDOC Week
We will investigate NAIDOC Week to understand its origins and significance to the identity and diversity of the Australian community.
