This unit is based on the Year 3 Australian Curriculum HASS Inquiry Skills, Knowledge and Understandings for History. Students will identify the significance of events, symbols and emblems to Australia’s identity and diversity. They will examine how events such as Australia Day, Anzac Day and NAIDOC Week are celebrated, commemorated or recognised in Australia.

Overview

The key concepts in this unit include:
 

  • Understanding the meaning of celebrations and commemorations, as well as, exploring how these are recognised in Australia.
  • Recognising points of view of significant events that have taken place in Australian history.
  • Exploring the symbols and emblems that represent Australia’s identity and diversity.
     
Learning Intention
  • We are learning to understand the days and weeks celebrated or commemorated in Australia (including Australia Day, Anzac Day and National Sorry Day) and the importance of symbols and emblems, e.g. flags.
  • We are learning to understand the celebrations and commemorations in places around the world (for example, Lunar New Year in countries of the Asia region), including those that are observed in Australia (for example, Christmas Day, ANZAC Day, NAIDOC Week, Diwali, Easter, Hanukkah, the Moon Festival and Ramadan).
