This unit has been designed to meet the requirements of the Year 1 Australian Curriculum Science - Chemical Sciences strand.
In this unit, students will understand that objects are made of materials that have observable properties. They will understand the various ways we can change materials, including freezing, melting, heating, bending, twisting, stretching, cutting, boiling, dissolving, moulding and mixing.
Everyday materials can be physically changed in a variety of ways
Science involves observing, asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events
People use science in their daily lives, including when caring for their environment and living things
Pose and respond to questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events
Use informal measurements to collect and record observations, using digital technologies as appropriate
Use a range of methods to sort information, including drawings and provided tables and through discussion, compare observations with predictions
Compare observations with those of others
Represent and communicate observations and ideas in a variety of ways
Observes, questions and collects data to communicate and compare ideas
Uses materials, tools and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity
Identifies that materials can be changed or combined
Describes how the properties of materials determine their use
Recognises observable changes occurring in the sky and on the land and identifies Earth’s resources
Describes observable features of living things and their environments
Identifies how plants and animals are used for food and fibre products
Describes common forms of energy and explores some characteristics of sound energy
Investigates how forces and energy are used in products
Describes, follows and represents algorithms to solve problems
Identifies the components of digital systems and explores how data is represented

Changing Materials
In this lesson students will investigate materials that can be changed by applying an action to them.
Lesson 3
Describing Materials
In this lesson students will describe materials and then sort them based on their material.
Lesson 4
Bending & Twisting
In this lesson students will investigate materials that can bend or twist.
Lesson 5
Stretching
In this lesson students will discover whether materials stretch or not.
Lesson 6
Dissolving & Heating
This lesson will investigate changes that occur to materials when they are heated.
Lesson 7
Cooling
In this lesson students will look at materials that change when they are cooled.
Lesson 8
Paper Plate Masks
In this lesson students will use a paper plate and different materials to design a mask.
