Types of Sentences

Our 'Types of Sentences' resource is a set of charts created by request, that defines the following types of sentences:

  • Simple Sentence
  • Compound Sentence
  • Complex Sentence
  • Coordinating Conjunctions
  • Subordinating Conjunctions

Each chart features an explanation as well as an example of the sentence type.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to create compound sentences by joining simple sentences with coordinating conjunctions.
  • We are learning to understand that a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction, e.g. because, if, that.
  • We are learning to understand that a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction, e.g. because, if, that, which is used to extend, elaborate and explain ideas.
  • We are learning to create compound sentences by joining simple sentences with coordinating conjunctions.
  • We are learning to use adjectival and adverbial clauses to build descriptions in texts and understand that a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction, e.g. because, if, that.
  • We are learning to understand that a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction, e.g. because, if, that.
  • We are learning to identify and use embedded clauses to expand the variety of complex sentences and extend ideas, e.g. My bike, which is very old (embedded clause), is broken.
