Peg a Problem β Addition and Subtraction Story Cards
These peg cards make a terrific low-prep, hands-on addition to your maths rotations when teaching addition and subtraction. There are 3 differentiated levels of story cards for your students to use. Simply read the story, solve the problem and place a peg on the correct answer.
These cards can be used as a whole class maths warmup or have them set up as a maths rotation. Each card is marked with 1, 2 or 3 stars to show its level of difficulty. Students can use counters to help them solve the problems.
Learning goals
- We are learning to use strategies for adding small groups of numbers, e.g. visual displays or concrete materials.
- We are learning to use counting or subitising strategies for addition and subtraction in everyday role-play situations.
- We are learning to use concrete materials or subitising to represent everyday situations that involve equal sharing and grouping.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Modifications
Use the cards marked with 1 star as they include a pictorial representation of each problem. You may also work in a small, guided teacher group and read the card for the students.
Extensions
Use the cards marked with 3 stars (number up to 20). Students can record each equation as they solve each card problem.
