My Decimat

My Decimat

This visual resource can be used in a variety of ways to help your students understand decimal place value and decimal size. For your convenience we have included two decimats (one extending to hundredths and the other to thousandths).
This mat will support your students to recognise the larger rectangles as one whole. From there, students will begin to recognise that the smaller rectangles can be divided into tenths, hundredths and thousandths. This decimat will support their understanding of the connection between fractions and decimals.

This resource was created as part of our ‘Dive into Decimals’ unit plan.

  • laminate and provide each student with a copy to refer to
  • display on smartboard and use as a whole class modelling activity
  • paired or group activity (teacher can provide decimals to represent)

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise and extend place value to tenths and hundredths use decimal notation to name and represent decimals.
  • We are learning to make connections between fractions and decimals to tenths and hundredths.
  • We are learning to compare and order numbers with more than two decimal places and represent decimal numbers including numbers greater than 1, e.g. 1.68cm, on number lines.
  • We are learning to recognise and represent the place value system extending to thousandths, e.g. one-thousandth and 0.001
