Decimal Of The Day

Decimal of the Day is a fantastic resource when teaching the concept of decimals. Depending on the level students are working on, the teacher can choose a decimal for students to dive into and explore its place value. Ideally, the teacher will model this activity to students before they attempt it themselves.

A dynamic resource which could be used in maths groups, an independent activity or as a whole class activity.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise and extend place value to tenths and hundredths use decimal notation to name and represent decimals.
  • We are learning to make connections between fractions and decimals to tenths and hundredths.
  • We are learning to compare and order numbers with more than two decimal places and represent decimal numbers including numbers greater than 1, e.g. 1.68cm, on number lines.
  • We are learning to recognise and represent the place value system extending to thousandths, e.g. one-thousandth and 0.001
  • We are learning to compare, order and represent decimals on number lines.
  • We are learning to recognise that 100% represents a whole and use percentages to describe, represent and compare relative percentages visually, e.g. shading a hundreds grid and connect percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents.
  • We are learning to compare, order and represent common fractions including halves, thirds and quarters on the same number line and justify their order.
  • We are learning to make connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.
