Delightful Decimals - Presentation

This detailed and comprehensive presentation begins by explaining what a decimal is, how we use them in our everyday lives and then proceeds to explain decimals up to three decimals places, using a variety of examples. Along with this, it explains the representation of decimals as fractions, models and on a number line.  The presentation compares and orders decimals through clear explanations and examples. It includes a variety of practice questions along with answers. This presentation is part of the Year 5 Delightful Decimals Unit Plan.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise and extend place value to tenths and hundredths use decimal notation to name and represent decimals.
  • We are learning to make connections between fractions and decimals to tenths and hundredths.
  • We are learning to compare and order numbers with more than two decimal places and represent decimal numbers including numbers greater than 1, e.g. 1.68cm, on number lines.
  • We are learning to recognise and represent the place value system extending to thousandths, e.g. one-thousandth and 0.001
  • We are learning to compare, order and represent decimals on number lines.
  • We are learning to recognise that 100% represents a whole and use percentages to describe, represent and compare relative percentages visually, e.g. shading a hundreds grid and connect percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents.
  • We are learning to compare, order and represent common fractions including halves, thirds and quarters on the same number line and justify their order.
  • We are learning to make connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.
