Grid Drawing - Comparing Area & Using Grid Reference Systems

This resource can be used to measure area using MAB Blocks. Alternatively, it can be used to introduce students to Grid Reference Systems.Β

Comparing areas using metric units, such as counting the number of square centimetres required to cover two areas by overlaying the areas with a grid of centimetre squares. Use a grid reference system in a barrier game where students use the grid references to recreate an image.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to compare the perimeter and area of shapes, counting appropriate formal and informal units.
  • We are learning to compare the areas of irregular shapes counting square centimetres.
  • We are learning to construct a grid coordinate system and use coordinates and directional language to locate and describe positions.
  • We are learning to use a grid reference system to describe locations, describe routes using landmarks and directional language.
