This unit is based on the Year 2 Australian Curriculum HASS Inquiry Skills, Knowledge and Understandings.
Students explore changes between the past and present, sorting them into 'then and now'.
They investigate and discuss reasons for changes in technology over time. The examine changes that have occured in land and sea transport as well as cooking, food preparation and storage, telephones, computers and toys.
They explore inventions in technology and they undertake an investigation of an invention of their choice.
How changing technology affected people’s lives (at home and in the ways they worked, travelled, communicated and played in the past)
Describes the effects of changing technology on people’s lives over time
Demonstrates skills of historical inquiry and communication
The effect of changing technology on people’s lives and their perspectives on the significance of that change

Lesson 1
Then and Now
In this lesson students will investigate the changes that have occurred from the past to now.
Lesson 2
Transport - Land
In this lesson student investigate changes to land transport. Without these changes, it would still take us a very long time to travel from one place to another.
Lesson 3
Sea Transport
Students investigate changes to sea transport. Without these changes, it would still take us a very long time to travel from one place to another.
Lesson 4
Cooking
In the lesson the students investigate changes to kitchens and cooking. Without these changes, it would still take a very long time to prepare and cook meals
Lesson 5
Cooking: Food Preparation and Storage
In this lesson students investigate the many changes that have occurred over time in food preparation and storage. These changes have made life easier for us all and provide us with more time for other activities
Lesson 6
Technology - Telephones
In this lesson the students investigate changes to telephones and communication devices. These changes have helped to bring the world closer together and make it easier to stay in touch with everyone we know
Lesson 7
Technology - Computers
In this lesson the students recognise how technology has brought about changes in computers, and identify how computers have changed our lives.
Lesson 8
Inventions in Technology
In this lesson students explore new inventions, identify and name some inventions in technology. They explore how all these technologies are continually changing and being upgraded for our use.
Lesson 9
Toys
In this lesson, students investigate changes in toys. These changes have occurred over time, with advances in technology. These advances are continually being upgraded.
