This short unit is based on the Foundation Australian Curriculum HASS Inquiry Skills, Knowledge and Understandings for History. Students explore family celebrations and significant events and how we remember them through commemorations.

Students will sequence commemorations in relation to the months of the year in which they occur. Students discuss how events from the past can be retold and remembered in stories. They will learn and sequence the Aboriginal Dreamtime story, Tiddalik. Students discuss, and learn, that different families have different family traditions and commemorations. Students will demonstrate their understanding of celebrations by answering questions about their favourite family celebrations. This is the perfect unit to use in the lead-up to a 100 Days of School Celebration. Students could use their knowledge of celebrations and commemorations to help plan the event.
