Using a Calculator for Fractions
This poster demonstrates how a scientific calculator can be used to solve fractions problems, which can be a confusing operation for some students. Note - not all calculators are able to handle fractions, so this resource may not be appropriate for your classroom.
This poster was created as part of a larger unit focusing on developing student’s understanding and proficiency in solving problems related to fractions of a whole.
Learning goals
- We are learning to find a simple fraction of a quantity where the result is a whole number, e.g. 1/3 of a number is the same as dividing by 3.
- We are learning to solve problems that require finding a familiar fraction, decimal or percentage of a quantity, including percentage discounts, choosing the best strategies.
- We are learning to investigate and calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items, with and without digital technologies.
