This fun activity is a great way to help students visualise the process of subtraction with regrouping. Students first create their subtraction problem, then represent it by drawing tens and ones. Drawing the subtraction problem in this way will help them regroup and solve it.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to use number sentences and partitioning to demonstrate the connection between addition and subtraction.
  • We are learning to use a range of mental and written strategies to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
  • We are learning to add and subtract two-and three-digit numbers using place value groupings.
  • We are learning to add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers, using a variety of strategies, e.g. partitioning, doubles, near doubles, bridging to 10 and rearranging and regrouping of numbers.
  • We are learning to solve problems by using number sentences for addition or subtraction.
  • We are learning to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to 10 000 using place value groupings.
