The Complex Sentences Presentation walks students through the structure of complex sentences and introduces the concept of embedded clauses. Students will also review simple and compound sentences and the different conjunctions used to connect independent clauses.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to identify and use embedded clauses to expand the variety of complex sentences and extend ideas, e.g. My bike, which is very old (embedded clause), is broken.
  • We are learning to understand that a complex sentence contains one independent clause and at least one dependent clause joined by a subordinating conjunction, e.g. because, if, that, which is used to extend, elaborate and explain ideas.
