Build It Better - Strategy Match-Up
This hands-on Strategy Match-Up Game helps students connect multiplication facts with efficient strategies such as doubling, double-doubling, and breaking apart known facts. Students match each multiplication fact card to the correct strategy explanation card, reinforcing conceptual understanding and flexible thinking.
Examples include:
- 8 × 4 → Double-double strategy
- 7 × 6 → 5 × 6 + 2 × 6
- 9 × 7 → 10 × 7 – 7
A perfect companion to the Build It Better presentation and quiz, this activity supports small group maths rotations, fast finishers, or independent fact fluency work.

- We are learning to follow and create number sentences to investigate number patterns and rules and to find emerging patterns.
- We are learning to use a range of strategies to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division where there is no remainder.
- We are learning to use estimation and rounding to check and explain calculations including transactions involving money.
- We are learning to recall multiplication facts up to 10 x 10 and related division facts, developing efficient mental strategies.
- We are learning to solve multiplication problems using mental and written strategies and calculators to check our answers.
- We are learning to describe, continue and create number patterns and use addition and subtraction to identify the rule.
