Australian States and Territory Poster

This simple and colourful poster has been designed to support the HASS curriculum in early years classrooms. The poster provides a clear map of Australia, highlighting each state/territory as well as their capital cities.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to identify the places we live in and belong to, e.g. neighbourhood, suburb, town and describe why these places are important.
  • We are learning to recognise natural, managed and constructed features of places, their location, how they change and how they can be cared for.
  • We are learning to understand the way the world is represented in geographic divisions and the location of Australia in relation to these divisions.
  • We are learning to create story maps or models to represent the location of places and features.
  • We are learning to identify the places we live in and belong to, e.g. neighbourhood, suburb, town, and describe the features of these places.
  • We are learning to understand the reasons why some places are special to people, and how they can be looked after.
  • We are learning to identify activities in our local place on a map, e.g. medical, police, waste management, and suggesting the reasons for their location.
  • We are learning to understand that places are parts of Earth’s surface that have been named by people, and how places can be described as personal, local, regional and national.
  • We are learning to understand connections of people in Australia to people in other places in Australia and across the world.
  • We are learning to understand why people choose to visit places, e.g. accessibility, transport, technology and distance, and the reason for visiting, e.g. shopping, recreation, sport, family.
