This unit is based on the Year 3 Australian Curriculum HASS Civics and Citizenships Knowledge and Understandings. The unit provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding about democracy, laws and citizens and citizenship, diversity and identity. Drawing on familiar contexts and personal experiences of fair play, different points of view, rules and consequences, and decision-making, students begin to develop an understanding of democracy as rule by the people (democracy, laws and citizens). Students explore how individuals, including themselves, participate in and contribute to their community (citizenship, diversity and identity).

Cultural Norms
In this lesson, students learn that there are cultural norms behind rulemaking.
Lesson 6
Local Community Groups
In this lesson, students learn about local community groups.
Lesson 7
Community Project
In the next few lessons, students will contribute to class discussions about what their community needs and develop a project to support these needs.
