Phonemic Awareness Teacher Cards

These Phonemic Awareness Teacher Cards are an extremely versatile resource that can be used individually, in rotations, or in whole class settings, particularly when you have 5 minutes spare in the day. These cards help students to develop their phonemic awareness as they begin to generate words that contain specific sounds. These prompting cards can be altered to focus on initial, medial, or final sounds depending on the level of difficulty you require for your students. This can also be extended into spelling the words that have been generated.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to orally blend and segment sentences, to segment words and manipulate phonemes in single-syllable words (phonological awareness).
  • We are learning to use letters and sounds to spell words.
  • We are learning to use sounds in spoken words, adding, deleting and subtracting initial, medial and final phonemes (sounds) to build new words (phonological awareness).
  • We are learning how to spell one- and two-syllable words with common letter patterns.
  • We are learning to segment words into separate phonemes (sounds), consonant blends or clusters at the beginnings and ends of words (phonological awareness).
