Geometry City - Map & Maths Design Project Pack

Geometry City is a creative, project-based maths pack where students design their own town map using their understanding of 2D shapes, perimeter, area, angles, and directional language.


Included in the pack:

  • Full student workbook in both colour and black-and-white versions
  • Tasks include drawing and labelling buildings, calculating perimeter and area, using compass directions, and working with angle types
  • Students respond to a series of real-world construction challenges like:
    o    Designing a symmetrical hexagon hospital
    o    Including a park shaped like a triangle
    o    Building using only right or obtuse angles
    o    Calculating building costs based on area
    o    Using only labelled 2D shapes for city structures


Encourages hands-on problem solving, spatial reasoning, and integration of multiple measurement skills.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to combine and split composite shapes to identify the common shapes and objects.
  • We are learning to use simple scales, legends and directions to interpret grid reference systems to locate and describe positions and pathways.
  • We are learning to connect 3-dimensional objects with their nets and build objects from their nets.
  • We are learning to construct a grid coordinate system and use coordinates and directional language to locate and describe positions.
  • We are learning to compare the parallel cross-sections of objects and recognise their relationships to prisms.
  • We are learning to recognise and create tessellations of shapes, e.g. tiling patterns, describing the transformations used.
