Etymology Super Quiz

This fun and engaging quiz includes questions to activate and test your student's knowledge of word etymology. The 15 questions provide definitions and examples of words and their root definitions and meanings and then asks students to identify the root words meaning. Great as a whole class activity, fast finisher or for literacy rotations; this activity was created for a larger unit of work on word etymology for Year 5.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to use vocabulary to express precise meaning using subject-specific words for different contexts, e.g. cut – slice, dice, filet, segment.
  • We are learning to use vocabulary, including Latin and Greek roots, to express precise meaning using subject-specific words for different contexts, e.g. instead of mammal or whale – humpback whale.
  • We are learning that the pronunciation, spelling and meanings of words have histories and change over time.
