Differentiation

Modifications

  1. Print the cards 4 to a page and ask students to sort objects or pictures under the correct initial sound or end sound.
  2. During circle time, place the cards in the centre of the circle and challenge students to pick up a card and say three words that begin with that letter. Extend students by asking them to name a word that ends with that letter.
  3. Use the cards as writing prompts. Select a letter of the alphabet and ask students to plan a narrative around the picture on that letter card or on a word that begins with the same letter.
  4. Choose a letter of the day. Explore words that begin with that letter and identify the phonemes used in each of the words.
  5. Choose a letter of the day and explore the different sounds that letter can make, e.g. a as in 'cat' or a as in 'swan', a as in 'ball', a as in 'banana', a as in 'zebra', a as in 'apron'

Extensions

  1. When studying a letter of the day, extend students by asking them to find words that begin with that letter in the dictionary. They can identify the number of phonemes, syllables, find the definition, use the word in a sentence.
