English Unit: Long E Sound

This unit is wonderful for learning and practising the concept of the ‘long e’ sound. The unit provides different vowel digraphs and graphs that make the long E sound and examples of words that contain this sound as well as the opportunity to practise the skill and sort words into their correct ‘vowel team’. The unit also provides numerous worksheets to practise the skills of saying, hearing, identifying and sorting the different long ‘e’ words.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to use most letter-sound matches including vowel diagraphs, less common long vowel patterns, e.g. ight, consonant clusters and silent letters, e.g. knife, thumb, when reading and writing words of one or more syllables.
  • We are learning to use digraphs, long vowels, blends and silent letters to spell one and two syllable words, including some compound words.
