Capacity Display

The Capacity Display is a set of clear, visual classroom posters illustrating key comparative terms related to volume and capacity:

   • Full
   • Nearly Full
   • Half Full
   • Nearly Empty
   • Empty

These A4 visuals help students build vocabulary and understanding of how we describe and compare the amount of space occupied in containers. Ideal for maths walls, measurement units, and group rotations.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to compare and order objects and events using length, mass, capacity and duration using comparative language, e.g. lightest, light, heavier, heaviest.
  • We are learning to measure and compare objects and events using length, mass and capacity, recognising that units need to be uniform, appropriate and used end-to-end.
  • We are learning to order objects based on lengths and capacities.
  • We are learning to compare and order shapes and objects based on length, area, volume and capacity.
  • We are learning to compare masses of objects using balance scales.

Curriculum alignment

Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Differentiation

Modifications

•    Print smaller cards for hands-on sorting or matching games.
•    Use as part of a station with actual containers students can match to the display.
•    Laminate and add Velcro for interactive whiteboard use.

Extensions

•    Use real containers for a hands-on activity where students label each level using the posters.
•    Have students take photos of classroom objects and sort them under the headings.
•    Pair with a capacity experiment using measuring cups and water.
